New York is filled with rumors, but the latest Blake Griffin for Carmelo Anthony rumor, is just not going to happen. However, it does show that the Knicks are looking to rebuild. So, I'm going to give them the blue print.
Currently, they have no 1st round picks, but that isn't going to stop them from getting a former one. Specifically, the Knicks would trade for Andrew Bynum and Dion Waiters and in return would give up Tim Hardaway Jr. and Raymond Felton. The Cavs would do this trade because they are looking to unload Bynum and Dion has been previously shopped. This would allow them to kill two birds with one stone. In the meantime, Cleveland would get young talent and a back up PG. While New York would get their shooting guard of the future and some cap space.
Next, the Knicks are going to get the next Eric Bledsoe by trading Iman Shumpert for Reggie Jackson. Though he hasn't shown it this season, a lot of people think Iman is a future star in this league. He would be a great addition to the Thunder. On the Knicks side, they obviously get a talented PG to put next to Dion Waiters.
Then there's the Daryl Morey factor. He's always searching for another superstar and this might be where the Knicks can take advantage of that. In this move, New York would send 'Melo to Houston for Jeremy Lin, Chandler Parsons and Omer Asik. Houston would finally put a third star next to their core of Dwight Howard and James Harden while ridding themselves of the overpaid Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin. Though this might be detrimental to Houston, Morey would probably pull the trigger anyway, because he's a big time gambler and wouldn't be able to resist. Meanwhile, New York would get a trade chip in Omer Asik as well as a reunion with Jeremy Lin and a productive scorer in Chandler Parsons.
Speaking of trade chips, I would then send Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik to Boston for Jeff Green and the terrible contract that is Gerald Wallace. The Celtics would finally get a big man to go along with a productive point guard. Also, they would gain cap room and get rid of the useless Gerald Wallace, who also has a bad attitude. If you look at the Knicks' point of view, they gain the flexible Jeff Green for two expendable players.
This would give the Knicks a starting line up of Reggie Jackson, Dion Waiters, Chandler Parsons, Jeff Green, and Tyson Chandler. Also, JR Smith would come off the bench along with Amare Stoudamire, Andrea Bargnani and a host of role players. This would give the Knicks young talent to go along with veteran leadership. New York would see a quick rebound along with a plethora of cap space when in two years Bargnani, Stoudamire and Tyson Chandler would come off the books. Though not all these trades can happen due to different teams' reluctance to pull the trigger, they all can happen financially, except for the Andrew Bynum trade. You can doubt this style of rebuilding all you want, but it is just as realistic as trading 'Melo for Blake Griffin. No matter what, the Knicks have shown what we've all known, that you need more than star power to build a star team.
