Alex Smith will never be a premiere QB in this league. He has a noodle for an arm and he refuses to take chances. With that said, he is better than a lot of other QB's in the league right now. Also, with trade rumors flying around, you have to wonder who is the best fit for Alex Smith.
If Alex is to have success, a lot of it will have to do with the head coach. Jim Harbaugh was able to instill him into an offense that involved short to intermediate passing. Rarely did Smith go deep. We look back at Alex's past and he was horrid when the 49er's were on a permanent coaching carousel and couldn't keep an offense.
So, who would be willing to put up with the inability to stretch the field? Well, not Bruce Arians. The new Cardinals coach likes to throw the bomb and he has the personnel to do it. Except for the QB position and here Alex Smith is not what they are looking for.
If you move on and look at the Buffalo Bills, they don't want an average veteran starter. However, at the same time, they want to win now. The biggest problem with the Bills is you have to figure that Ryan Nassib will reunite with his former coach.
The Cleveland Browns is another option, but they don't have the correct personnel to run the West Coast offense. Plus, even if they did want to, they have Alex Smith 2.0 in Colt McCoy. So, there is no real need for Alex to land in Cleveland.
Lets not forget about the Kansas City Chiefs. Andy Reid was shot down by his former team in hopes of landing Nick Foles. That right there shows Reid has real concerns about the talent level of this year's draft. Then, many have expressed that Andy thinks that Alex would be a great fit in his West Coast offense. Also, it's not like the Chiefs have any need to take the top off the defense. In fact, the best fit might be a West Coast offense with a heavy dose of Jamaal Charles. This would be in the best mind for Alex Smith and would make the most sense for the team that's trading for him.
